Randeep Hooda has played the role of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar in this film. But do you know that before Randeep Hooda, Annu Kapoor had also played the role of Savarkar on the big screen. In the year 1996, the film Kalapani was made under the direction of Priyadarshan. Artists like Mohanlal, Amrish Puri, Tabu and Annu Kapoor were seen in that film. Annu Kapoor played the role of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar in the film.
Annu Kapoor had talked about the character he played in the film in an interview given to Laharen. He had said, “When it comes to motherland, I become a very passionate person.” He had also told that during the making of the film, he had also gone to Cellular Jail in Port Blair. Regarding his experience, he had said, “Going there was like going on a pilgrimage.”

Annu Kapoor did not take any money for working in the film. He said, “That was a very personal thing. If I work for free, it was my personal decision and I will not glorify it, even if I worked without taking any money.” He had said that this is not just for Kalapani, if anyone else also approaches him for good work then he will do the same. He simply stipulated that the work should have some meaning.
When will Randeep's 'Swatantrya Veer Savarkar' come out?
Along with acting, Randeep Hooda has also played the responsibility of direction in 'Swatantrya Veer Savarkar'. During the trailer launch, Randeep Hooda said that Savarkar was not an unforgiving person and he described Savarkar as courageous.
